OUR STORY

"Turning Performance into Power"

The thunderous beats of a high-step marching band filled the air, electrifying the crowd at a local parade. Among the spectators, 13-year-old Maurice Grier stood transfixed, his mind racing with possibilities. At that moment, a vision was born – one that would transform the landscape of marching band performances and create unprecedented opportunities for musicians across the nation.

Maurice J. Grier's path to founding the League of Performing Artists (LPA) was paved with a deep love for music and a keen understanding of the challenges faced by marching band musicians. Growing up in Charlotte, North Carolina, Maurice was immersed in the vibrant culture of high-step marching bands from an early age. His own experiences as a young musician opened his eyes to the immense talent within these bands and the limited professional opportunities available to them.

As Maurice pursued his education, earning a B.S. in Political Science and Music Performance from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, his vision for LPA continued to take shape. The combination of his musical background and political science studies provided him with a unique perspective on how to create meaningful change in the industry.

In 2010, at just 13 years old, Maurice took the bold step of founding LPA. His goal was clear: to bridge the gap between the incredible talent in high-step marching bands and the professional opportunities they deserved.

From its humble beginnings, LPA has stayed true to its core mission: to help musicians earn a livable wage through marching band performances. This innovative approach to supporting artists has resonated with musicians, educational institutions, and music lovers alike.

As the organization grew, so did its impact. LPA expanded its reach, partnering with university marching bands across the country. These partnerships have been instrumental in creating a network of talented performers and providing them with professional platforms to showcase their skills.

One of LPA's most significant initiatives has been the creation of virtual competitions with substantial cash prizes. These events not only showcase the incredible talents of marching band musicians but also provide tangible financial support to participants. By leveraging technology and embracing digital platforms, LPA has been able to reach a wider audience and create more opportunities for its members.

Over the years, LPA has celebrated numerous milestones that underscore its commitment to supporting musicians:

  1. Partnerships with prestigious institutions: LPA has forged partnerships with several university marching bands, including Albany State University, for its 2024 inaugural season.

  2. Educational support: The organization has sponsored students to attend events like the Black Sports Business Symposium, providing valuable networking and learning opportunities.

  3. Scholarship programs: LPA established the Butterfly Effect Scholarship for West Charlotte Senior High School students, investing in the next generation of talented musicians.

  4. Innovative competitions: The launch of virtual competitions with significant cash prizes has revolutionized how marching band talents are showcased and rewarded.

  5. Expansion of services: LPA has broadened its scope to include content creation and merchandise, further supporting its mission and members.

As LPA looks to the future, our commitment to empowering musicians and elevating the art of marching band performance remains stronger than ever. Under the continued leadership of Maurice Grier, now a law student at Howard University School of Law, and supported by a dedicated team of professionals, LPA is poised for even greater impact.

Our vision extends beyond just creating performance opportunities. We aim to reshape the landscape of the performing arts, ensuring that the incredible talents within marching bands receive the recognition and compensation they deserve. From expanding our university partnerships to exploring new competitive art forms, LPA is dedicated to pushing boundaries and opening doors for musicians.

Join us as we march forward, creating a world where passion meets opportunity, and where every beat, every step, and every note contributes to a brighter future for performing artists.
